Retarders

Retarders, also known as the 4th brake, are an ideal and cost-effective deceleration system.
TBK has developed retarders as part of our ongoing pursuit for enhanced driving safety. As retarders are noncontact systems, they create no physical wear, making them an ideal auxiliary braking system. Our development of retarders began in the 1960’s. Today, buses, trucks, and other heavy-duty vehicles are equipped with our retarders. By drawing on our wealth of expertise accumulated over time, we developed our current range of electromagnetic/electronically controlled retarders (Eddytarder), which are favored by many customers.

Electromagnetic Retarders

Outstanding characteristics of TBK’s retarders

■Safety and comfort. TBK’s retarders work to directly control and slow down the drive shaft, thus reducing the brake load and minimizing the risk of brake fade and vapor lock. The effectiveness of the retarders is further leveraged when used in conjunction with auto cruise control systems. Thanks to the retarders, drivers do not need to brake as frequently, thus minimizing driver fatigue.
■Potential. The ongoing pursuit for the enhanced safety in vehicles equipped with advanced technology makes the electromagnetic or electronically controlled retarders ideal for controlling the speed and maintaining the inter-vehicle distance in autonomous driving due to their noncontact nature and instant response.
■Installation. Our retarders are mounted directly onto the drive shaft. Thus, they do not require any engine modifications. As they operate friction-free, there is also no need for maintenance. In addition, the equipped air cooling system means they do not require any cooling devices.

Regeneration-type Retarder

The regeneration-type retarder does not require a power supply and thus reduces the load on the engine, which further contributes to saving energy. The regenerated power can also be extracted.
